Jose Lima's a pretty terrible pitcher, but you've gotta give the guy credit for that champagne stunt. Hell, I wanted to pop open a bottle of the bubbly after Doogie got the last out. As much as I was "pulling" for the Royals to get swept this weekend and catch the '88 Orioles, the latter stages of the game were like those of a division-clinching win.
Doogie might be having a good year, but in no way is he one of the premier closers in baseball. I still don't really trust him to turn his ability into dependable production, so I think we might see him traded this winter.
I'm siding with Kevin -- Mac still has plenty of control issues, and before he can even be a closer, and not just the guy who they let close, he has to fix them.
That being said, many of his numbers are at a career-high level for him, or they are very close to his 2003 All-Star-by-default numbers, which weren't too bad.
Hits, walks. Cut those two numbers down (Mac has a 1.41 WHIP - too high for a closer) and we have something...of course, he's already 28, so time is running out.
