Flash: Baird out, Moore in.

The Royals today announced that general manager and RC official hero Allard Baird has been fired, and it is being reported that Dayton Moore from the Atlanta Braves organization has agreed to take over after the draft next week. RC is working on a full post and will have more for you later this afternoon/early evening.

EDIT: The Royals have scheduled a press teleconference at 3:00 pm CST. You can listen to it here.

Thanks to Mr. Baird for being such a class act. He deserved better than the last month, but it goes on all the time, in many pro sports (gunther fired on the internet, and crazily coming home to the chiefs, is a crazy example). That said, it feels so good to actually have a fan base from a model franchise like the Braves, unanimously bemoan the departure of Moore, and be envious of our lowly Royals. We are not a punchline, for at least one day. Braves fans are P.O.'d that we got Moore. Not many in Georgia thought we could pull this off, but many thought John S may want to help us out of old loyalty. I guess the braves ownership is up in the air, which is speculation as to why moore left atlanta? Braves fans are VERY WORRIED that moore will also bring along a core group of talented folks from their scouting department.

what good is a new GM going to do if the Glass family doesn't want to open up their wallets? I thought Baird did pretty well with the money he had to work with.

I don't think we can say they don't want to open up their wallets. We didn't re-sign Beltran, but Glass has repeated many times that he would be willing to increase payroll for a winning team. He gave Baird double digit millions of dollars this off-season to play with. Also, we re-signed Mike Sweeney following his incredible 2002 season. We can all use retrospect, and say what a terrible deal it is, but it was a big signing for us in '02. When it comes down to it, Glass will spend money on a winner, and he's proved this before.

Now we just need Moore to get us a winner.

Getting Moore was a big win for this organization, and if reports are correct, giving him full control of personnel decisions is even bigger. Baird was a class act, but just did not get the job done, regardless of the fact he had little control, and little to spend. Times they are a changin though in KC and I look forward to seeing improvement in the next few years.

HORRAY!!

Sorry to see Allard go, he put up with a lot and is a better man and GM than his record shows. Getting out form under Glass and this team is a blessing, he'll be helping another team win soon enough.

Plus, I LOVE the fact the the Royals took Moore after he turned down the Red Sox, take THAT northeast, we actualy play baseball all over this country, though ESPN and the AL all-star ballot might disagree.

I hope Moore's first move is to release Guiel from AAA.

just to clarify -- I meant I hope he gives Guiel his walking papers.....not bring him up to the bigs.

Then maybe, just maybe, we can move beyond the 4th/5th OF debate on the worst team in baseball.
